PEERS® social skills program for children and adolescents
Many children and adolescents with ASD have a desire to have meaningful friendships and learn ways to behave in socially-typical manner but may lack the prerequisite social skills. NYBAPS provides the PEERS® social skills program for those with ASD, the only evidence-based curriculum for social skills training in ASD.
​What does a PEERS® class look like?
During each session, children are taught basic play and social skills, a range of games, and activities designed to rehearse newly learned skills and reinforce skill development in a naturalistic setting.

Preschool topics of instruction include how to:
  • Listen and follow directions
  • Ask for and use friends’ names
  • Greet friends
  • Share and give turns to friends
  • Ask for turns during play
  • Keep cool when upset during play
  • Be flexible, cooperative during play
  • Be a good sport
  • Sustain play through commenting
  • Ask friends to play
  • Join ongoing game play
  • Transition to new play activities
  • Ask for help and help friends
  • Maintain appropriate body boundaries
  • Use good volume control when talking to friends
Adolescent topics of instruction include how to:
  • How to use appropriate conversational skills
  • How to find common interests by trading information
  • How to appropriately use humor
  • How to enter and exit conversations between peers
  • How to be a good host during get-togethers
  • How to make phone calls to friends
  • How to choose appropriate friends
  • How to be a good sport
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements
  • How to change a bad reputation
  • How to handle rejection, teasing, and bullying
  • How to handle rumors and gossip

​How would I (as a parent) be involved?
Parent involvement is imperative in PEERS®. In fact, parents are required to attend separate sessions. Parents will be trained on how to help their children make and keep friends.

When do the classes start?
Classes are held weekly from 4:00pm-5:30 pm at NYBAPS Midtown East location. Enrollment is limited to 10 children. A minimum of 4 children is required.
The next group of PEERS® for Preschoolers (age 4-6) will be held:
Please sign up for our newsletter as the Preschoolers’ curriculum has not yet been released. Once it is released, we will begin offering Preschooler PEERS Groups.
The next group of PEERS® for Adolescents (middle school & high school) will be held:
  • September – December 2018
  • March – June 2019
  • ​July – October 2019


How do I register?​
Please contact us for a screening interview to determine whether your child meets the enrollment criteria. ​Please note, you may experience a long wait period, as groups are developed based on language ability, diagnosis, and age. In order for the group to be effective, the children need to challenge one another.

What is PEERS®?
 
PEERS® is the Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills. It is a 16-week evidence-based social skills program for children, adolescents, and adults diagnosed with ASD developed by Dr. Laugeson at UCLA.

​Both Dr. La Barbera and Dr. Yoo were trained and certified by 
Dr. Laugeson.
